Blues Scale
Adding the Blue Note
The blues scale adds one note to the pentatonic minor — the b5 (also called the blue note).
Starting from A: A-C-D-Eb-E-G-A.
The Eb creates a chromatic passage (D-Eb-E) that gives the blues its characteristic tension and grit. The blue note is typically played as a passing tone rather than a resting point.
A Blues Scale
Study the A blues scale ascending. Follow the chromatic movement from D through Eb to E — this is the heart of the blues sound.
Play A Blues Scale
- Play the A blues scale ascending and descending
- Emphasize the blue note (Eb) as a passing tone between D and E
- Try sliding or bending into the blue note for authentic blues phrasing
