Dorian Mode

Minor with a Raised 6th

The Dorian mode follows the pattern W-H-W-W-W-H-W.

Starting from D: D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D.

Dorian is like a natural minor scale with a raised 6th degree. Compared to D natural minor (D-E-F-G-A-Bb-C-D), the only difference is B natural instead of Bb.

This raised 6th gives Dorian a slightly brighter, jazzier quality than natural minor. It is widely used in jazz, funk, and modal rock.

D Dorian Scale

Study the D Dorian scale ascending. Notice that it uses the same notes as C major but starts and resolves on D.

Play D Dorian

  • Play the D Dorian scale ascending and descending
  • Compare to D natural minor — listen for the brighter 6th degree (B vs Bb)
  • Emphasize the D as your tonal center to feel the Dorian quality
