Eighth-Note Rhythm and Subdivision

Dividing the Beat into Two

An eighth note divides one beat into two equal parts.

In 4/4 time, each measure holds 8 eighth notes. We count them as: 1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and.

The numbered beats (1, 2, 3, 4) are called downbeats. The and counts are called upbeats or offbeats.

Mixing quarter notes and eighth notes creates rhythmic variety — quarter notes provide stability while eighth notes add forward momentum.

Mixed Quarter and Eighth Note Patterns

Study this pattern that mixes quarter and eighth notes. Notice how the eighth notes add energy between the steadier quarter note beats.

Perform Eighth-Note Rhythms

  • Clap or play the rhythm, emphasizing the accented notes
  • Count 1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and throughout
  • Keep even spacing between the eighth notes
  • Try at different tempos — start slow and gradually increase
