Harmonic Minor Scale
The Raised 7th Degree
The harmonic minor scale takes the natural minor and raises the 7th degree by a half step, creating the pattern W-H-W-W-H-WH-H.
Starting from A: A-B-C-D-E-F-G#-A.
The raised 7th (G#) creates a leading tone that pulls strongly toward the tonic. This also produces an augmented 2nd interval (F-G#) that gives the scale its distinctive, exotic sound.
A Harmonic Minor Scale
Study the A harmonic minor scale ascending. Notice the augmented 2nd between F and G# — this wider gap is the signature sound of the harmonic minor.
