Mixolydian Mode

Major with a Flat 7th

The Mixolydian mode follows the pattern W-W-H-W-W-H-W.

Starting from G: G-A-B-C-D-E-F-G.

Mixolydian is like a major scale with a lowered 7th degree. Compared to G major (G-A-B-C-D-E-F#-G), the only difference is F natural instead of F#.

This b7 creates a dominant sound — Mixolydian is the scale of dominant 7th chords and is essential in blues, rock, and country music.

G Mixolydian Scale

Study the G Mixolydian scale ascending. Notice it uses the same notes as C major but starts and resolves on G.

Play G Mixolydian

  • Play the G Mixolydian scale ascending and descending
  • Compare to G major — notice the F natural instead of F#
  • Emphasize the G as your tonal center to feel the dominant quality
