Rests, Ties, and Anticipations
Silence and Connection in Rhythm
Rests are silences that last for a specific duration — they are just as important as the notes.
| Symbol | Name | Duration (in 4/4) |
|---|---|---|
𝄻 | Whole rest | 4 beats |
𝄼 | Half rest | 2 beats |
𝄽 | Quarter rest | 1 beat |
𝄾 | Eighth rest | 0.5 beats |
A tie connects two notes of the same pitch, combining their durations into one sustained sound. For example, a quarter note tied to another quarter note sounds like a half note.
An anticipation places a note slightly before the expected beat, creating forward motion by arriving early. Ties across bar lines are the most common way to notate anticipations.

Perform Rhythms with Rests and Ties
- Clap for notes and open your hands for rests — give rests their full duration
- Hold tied notes for their combined value without re-articulating
- Count steadily through the rests — do not speed up during silence
- Try different tempos to feel how rests change the groove
