Rhythm Notation and Counting Basics

Understanding Beat and Duration

Rhythm is organized around a steady pulse or beat.

Note values tell us how long each sound lasts:

SymbolNameBeats (in 4/4)
𝅝Whole note4
𝅗𝅥Half note2
Quarter note1
Eighth note0.5

In 4/4 time, there are 4 beats per measure with the quarter note getting one beat.

Quarter and Eighth Note Pattern

Study this pattern of quarter and eighth notes in 4/4 time. Count 1-2-3-4 for quarter notes and 1-and-2-and for eighth notes.

Clap the Rhythm

  • Clap or tap along with each note
  • Count out loud: 1-2-3-4 for each measure
  • Keep a steady tempo — use a metronome if available
