Rhythm Notation and Counting Basics
Understanding Beat and Duration
Rhythm is organized around a steady pulse or beat.
Note values tell us how long each sound lasts:
| Symbol | Name | Beats (in 4/4) |
|---|---|---|
𝅝 | Whole note | 4 |
𝅗𝅥 | Half note | 2 |
♩ | Quarter note | 1 |
♪ | Eighth note | 0.5 |
In 4/4 time, there are 4 beats per measure with the quarter note getting one beat.
