Syncopated Groove

Syncopated Left Hand

A syncopated accompaniment places chord tones in unexpected rhythmic positions. The pattern uses root–3rd–5th–3rd, and the syncopated feel comes from playing these as sixteenth notes against a slower tempo.

This creates rhythmic tension and groove — essential for funk, R&B, and modern pop piano.

Syncopated ii–V–I–IV in C

The root–3rd–5th–3rd pattern with sixteenth-note subdivision creates a driving rhythmic groove.

Play Syncopated Groove in C

  • Start very slowly — sixteenth notes at a slow tempo still move quickly.
  • Accent the root (first note of each group) slightly louder.
  • Keep your wrist relaxed — tension will slow you down.
  • Once stable, gradually increase the BPM in small increments.
