Three-Notes-Per-String Position Sweep
Climbing the Neck in Positions
The three-notes-per-string system gives a mode seven positions, each anchored on the next scale degree. Practising them in order — a sweep — builds a map of the whole neck.
We sweep three adjacent positions at a time. The full seven-position run covers sixteen frets at once, which is too much to absorb in one go.
G Major — Position 1
Start with position 1 of G major in the 3NPS system.
Sweep Positions 1 → 2 → 3
- Play position 1, then 2, then 3 without stopping
- Each position climbs higher up the neck on the same scale
- Notice how the last notes of one position set up the next
